Walter the Trout

By Jesse Froeschle on February 1, 2019

Legend tells of the infamous trout known as “Walter” the 23 year old rainbow trout of Gore Creek. Do you think you have the skill to maneuver the flow of Gore Creek to find him?

Yes.  He is huge.  He is a legend to the Gore Creek.  Only a few very experienced Fishermen have been able to catch him.   He makes his home right behind Hotel Talisa.

He is a beautifully colored rainbow trout, 23 inches in length and 4 1/2-5 pounds.  We have known Walter for about 23 years, but have no idea of his age.  He is the

Grandfather of the rainbow trout in the Gore Creek.

As the Gore Creek is strictly catch & release for fish under 16 inches, fisherman who have had the privilege of catching Walter release him as well admiring his beauty, and what he represents to our area.

Also, another tid bit of information; all 4 trout species can be caught in the Gold Medal-rated Gore Creek; Rainbow, Brook, Brown & Cutthroat.  Catching all 4 species in one stream is very rare.  This is called a Grand Slam and one can only hope to achieve a Grand Slam in only about 4 streams/rivers in Colorado.
